Thanks, Kate for helping Logan Square’s community farm start the season right!

First off, a big thank you to everyone that worked so amazingly hard last Saturday. We got a ton accomplished, and the farm is feeling like spring. Read our blog post recap to see what we got done and view photos from the workday.

The end of April means it’s time for the garden to shift into high gear – AND it’s an appropriate moment for my favorite joke of all time…

Q: If April showers bring May flowers, what do May flowers bring?

At your ASCF, May means that compost will be reopening, Monday and Wednesday gatherings will be gathered, and Saturday workdays will be happening with greater frequency.

You can always check out upcoming events on our website or by linking directly to our calendar, but here’s a preview of the big events coming up in early May:

• Wednesday, May 2 @ 6:30p - compost drop off resumes for the season! Your ASCF compost mavens will be accepting your greens and browns every Wednesday 6:30-7:30p.
• Saturday, May 5th workday @ 9a til 1p – we’ll be:
• Getting our big compost drop off and need lots of help digging it into the soil. Soil amendments are the #1 we do to help our plants grow;
• Spreading woodchips to make our garden look its best;
• Putting some seedlings in the ground!
• Sunday, May 6 @ 7:30p  – ASFC inaugural movie night! We’ll be screening What’s on Your Plate with a special celluloid treat for the kids – families definitely encouraged.

The farm is looking great, but we’re going to need your help tending and watering now and throughout the season. If you missed the kickoff meeting, you can still sign up for teams (tending/watering, composting, development, arts and programming)  and become a core part of your community farm.

Plus, we’ve got more jokes (none are better than the pilgrim joke).

• A couple beds were gussied up and repaired;
• Our compost team sorted compost and volunteers tilled it into beds and berms;
• Early crops were thinned and transplanted; and
• Fun was had, all around!

Compost dropoff begins for the season on Wednesday, May 2nd and our next workday is Saturday, May 5th.

This Saturday (4/21) from 10a til 1p, you, me and everyone we know will be at the ASCF tilling soil and generally having a wonderful time.

We need your hands for:

• Sorting compost – so our plants can grow up big and strong
• Turning said compost into garden beds – again with the big and strong thing
• Giving a couple beds some handyman TLC
• Generally giving the garden a good once over so we’re ready to grow this season!

If you can stay the whole time or only for an hour, we’d love to see you on Saturday! It’s a great chance to meet your fellow farmers and get involved with the farm for the year.

We’re going to be waking the garden up soon – in fact, we’ve got garlic and onions coming up already, and there should even be some peas starting to grow here and there.

To celebrate our absurd March weather, we’re having a very informal workday on the 24th – 10a til noon. If you want to help get some beds ready to go, stop on by! We’ll announce our kickoff meeting and official workdays soon!

And, again, thanks to everyone who came out Monday. It was great to see familiar and new faces! We appreciate your support, and are looking forward to another amazing growing season with you!
